Celtic 1-3 Rangers: Chris Sutton slams star who “had a shocker” in Old Firm derby

Chris Sutton fumed at one Celtic star who “had a shocker” vs Rangers as the Hoops fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat in the Old Firm derby.

Celtic shocked by Rangers resurgence in Old Firm defeat

Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy is surely standing on the precipice after Old Firm rivals Rangers came from behind to win 3-1 at Parkhead. Hoops fans had turned on the French coach after just two wins in seven games as boss and he had pleaded for time.

It looked like he was catching a break when South Korea international Yang Hyun-jun scored a terrific solo goal in the 20th minute of a Scottish Premiership game dominated by the home side.

However, in a remarkable second-half turnaround, Rangers’ much-maligned £8million striker Youssef Chermiti scored twice in nine minutes before Mikey Moore added a third in the 71st minute to leave Celtic stunned.

Hoops fans remain in a battle with the club’s boardroom and that will continue in tandem with their quest to rid the club of the former Columbus Crew boss Nancy, who must be on borrowed time.

Danny Rohl has rejuvenated Rangers in terms of league results since taking over from Russell Martin but this was a statement win for the German coach as his side went level on points with second-placed Celtic.

Celtic fans exploded in anger, “sack the board” chants resurfaced, and many had left before the final whistle allowed just over 2,000 Gers fans to celebrate a victory that looked unlikely at the interval.

Whether Nancy survives such a defeat is now the big question and the same can be said for one player who left Sutton fuming.

Chris Sutton: Schmeichel "had a shocker" vs Rangers

As the Old Firm derby descended into chaos for the hosts, the last thing they needed is for Kasper Schmeichel to send an ill-timed reminder about his age. The 39-year-old couldn’t quite get down quick enough to keep Moore’s effort out in a moment that Sutton slammed.

The former Hoops forward didn’t hold back, claiming that the veteran goalkeeper “had a shocker” when attempting to save Moore’s effort. In one moment, one of Celtic’s most experienced stars helped Rangers seal all three points in shocking fashion.

With his contract coming to an end in the summer, Schmeichel looks destined to bow out with a whimper rather than the usual roar Celtic fans became so used to when he first arrived in 2024.

Where the Bhoys turn to when he does leave remains to be seen, but it must be a long-term option even if it’s not Nancy in charge when the transfer window does arrive.

The Frenchman came out in defence of his tenure in the build-up, making the Old Firm derby a must-win. Now, his job is more at risk than ever before in Scotland.
